Supply and Demandchildren engaged in activity

Total Time Spent:  20 Hours

Target: Second graders at Quindaro Elementary

Goal:    Teach the children about supply and demand, explain how the economy works, invent and play a fun and educational game so the children could place themselves in the shoes of a consumer.

Accomplished:  The children each received the same amount of cans and were given a choice of items to buy.

The prices of the items were all the same the first round of the game.  The item that was chosen the most had a one can price increase while the item chosen the least had a decrease in price by one can.  The children were then given more cans to once again visit our  store.  The children began to realize that they could no longer afford the items they wanted the most, but could now get two or more less popular items for the same amount of cans.

Follow up:  As we left, the teacher continued the day by reinforcing the lessons we had taught.  All of the children were given supplies that were needed, such as pencils, paper, and erasers.  All of the can goods used in this project were donated to our community.  We were asked to come back soon and we were awarded with letters of thanks from each individual child.

Entrepreneurshipstudents at workshop

Total Time Spent:  75 Hours

Target:  Students at Academy of Kansas City

Goal:    Explain what an entrepreneur is and who can be one.  Teach that every profession has a purpose and need in our everyday economy.  Help set up ways the school could plan, market,   and sale products to raise money for their school.

Accomplished:  Over 70 fifth threw eighth grade students participated in this workshop.  The simple question of "What do you like to do" started our presentation.  The children answered with a variety of hobbies.  It was then explain how  everything they enjoy doing can be made into a business.  Many of the children were surprised that playing with hair, riding a bike, playing sports, or simply baby-sitting could make them so much money if they decided to open  their own business in one of those fields.

The children were then given ideas of things they could do to raise money for school activities.  Easter baskets were made and filled with candy and toys.  It was then showed that even though the average price of making a basket was two dollars, they could easily be sold for five to ten dollars.  The students were shocked to see over a two hundred percent profit could be made from each basket.

Follow up:   Students were asked to write down one thing they learned and found interesting.  The principle of the school said we were a “blessing in disguise” and asked us to please return for many more projects.

  Promotion & Fundraisingyoung man

 Total Time Spent:  68 Hours

Target:  KCKCC students, family and friends

Goal:    Since this is the first semester ever for KCKCC to have a S.I.F.E. team, we needed to get the word out.  We also teamed up with some of  the art students at our college to help promote the art department.  Funding was needed to bring our team to competition, so  sale of raffle tickets was done on and off of campus.

Accomplished:  During half time, at a few of our basketball games, a booth was set up to promote S.I.F.E. to KCKCC students, their families and friends. The art department joined forces with S.I.F.E. by drawing live pictures during the games and sold them to raise a little money for their future projects.  This very clearly represented students in free enterprise.  Many students inquired about the S.I.F.E. program and decided they would like to join the team.

Over 250 raffle tickets were sold within two months to help support financial needs of our S.I.F.E. team.  The drawing was for two prizes, a CD player and a TV with VCR.  Tickets were sold during school hours at a booth set up close to the cafeteria and off campus to family and friends.  This raffle drawing not only helped our funding, but also spread the word about S.I.F.E.

Follow up:          We will begin fundraising shortly after competition to give us a full year to raise money.  Continuation of promoting our S.I.F.E. team will never end.  Building a larger and stronger team will be our goal for many years to come, and helping our community will always be our first priority.
