Have you heard about Jane Elliott?
Ms. Elliott is a former Iowa elementary school teacher. After the
assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr. in 1968, it was glaringly apparent
to her that many people in her hometown were racists, and that racism
was
evident even in the young students in her classrooms.
Jane Elliott strongly feels that racism is wrong, and to change her students
views about others who were different from them, she created racism in
her
own classroom. She divided blue eyed and brown eyed students and allowed
one
group to discriminate against the other. Ms. Elliott's work demonstrated
how
racism is created and how it can be undermined.
We will watch and discuss the video that was produced from Elliott's
exercise, A Class Divided, and a more current video, Angry Eyes, that
shows
college students participating in the blue eye/brown eye exercise.
