Computer Requirements: Hardware & Software


This is a list of things you should know and have prior to enrolling in an online course.

You will need:

  • A computer
  • A modem
  • A browser
  • An Internet Service Provider (ISP)
  • A telephone line or high-speed connection like DSL or a cable modem (Road-runner).

Computer Hardware Requirements

PC: A 486/66Mhz PC with Windows 95 or 98 is the minimum. Pentium processors are preferred. Minimum RAM is 32MB with preferred RAM at 64MB. Some instructors use chat rooms and other memory intensive tools therefore, it is best to have 64MB as a minimum requirement and 128MB as the preferred requirement.

MACS: Any Macintosh with a 68040 processor and at least 32MB of RAM is the minimum. Some instructors use chat rooms and other memory intensive tools therefore, it is best to have 64MB as a minimum requirement and 128MB as the preferred requirement. Note: Macs using IE browsers are not recommended for synchronous classes-those using Chat or Whiteboard features-as problems can occur.

CD-ROMS: Some courses will require a computer with a CD-ROM drive.

Audio: Some courses may use audio files and for this your computer will need a sound card and speakers.

Modem: The minimum recommended modem speed is 28.8 kbps but, at least 56K is preferable. Cable modems and DSL connections are from 30 to 100 time faster than modems and currently cost $30-$50 a month. Find out if these services are offered in your area.

Browsers: Java-enabled web browsers-supporting Java and JavaScript-are recommended. Use Netscape 4.0 or higher (Netscape GOLD is not supported) OR Internet Explorer 4.0 or higher. To upgrade your browser please click on the link below and follow the directions:
